Spirituality Course

Comments on Lesson 15 – Dr of Spirituality course

Many of us experience fear at one time or another, but it can be conquered by the right thoughts being projected against it. Fear can take many forms as shown in the Course, some of which can be permanently debilitating as Dr Siani points out in the case study eg phobias, panic attacks etc. I have known otherwise rational people who are afraid of things like lifts who would prefer to walk up a long staircase rather than use a lift. This can result in a panic attack if for any reason they have to use a lift. This is one of many phobias and dislikes that can cause health problems.

The way out of these difficulties is explained in the course and provides some ideas for dealing with this type of problem. There must always be a solution but it requires as indicated, some delving into past memories etc to find out the root cause of fears they are experiencing and to show the person concerned how to fight them.  Together with love, we have forgiveness and again, the person must be prepared to realise the root cause and be ready to show forgiveness where it may be necessary. I accept that for this to work well requires a sound faith in God from whom true love comes.

With open acceptance of the reality of the problem, the person can start to get to grips with with the fears that haunt them, but obviously this will take time and effort and it is up to us to follow them through the difficulties that lie ahead giving them our support, raising their confidence by being there for them.

As the course says, faith is not easy and we must seek to be guided by God and seek his strength to make our faith more firm. We must learn to realise the feeling of peace that comes when we are being guided by God rather than the internal fear produced by the ego. I know that I too have certain fears which need the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome them with love and I suspect that it will not be easy. The guidance is there in the lesson to follow.

I have found this lesson very illuminating and the prayers helpful for myself. I shall continue to study how to overcome fear and more importantly now I have at least some tools available to help others who may be afflicted with these fears and who want to be rid of them.
